As the lecturer for the Ancient Greeks at War module, your role is to convene, deliver, and assess this 15-credit year 2 module. This module is optional for students studying BA History, BA Ancient History, and various combined honours programs.
The module focuses on the role of warfare in ancient Greek history and society, covering topics from the legendary tales of the Trojan War to the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great.
Description
In this module, students will explore ancient Greek warfare from multiple perspectives, including military, political, social, economic, cultural, and religious aspects.
They will analyze written and material evidence from the Classical Greek period and study major wars, their preliminaries, events, and conclusions. Additionally, the wider impact of warfare on ancient Greek society will be examined.
The module places particular emphasis on two key wars
the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War. These wars, including notable battles like Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis, had a significant influence on Greek history and culture. The Persian Wars shaped the Greeks’ self-definition and led to the rise of the Athenian Empire.
Alexander the Great later embarked on his conquest as a Greek war of revenge against the Persians. The Peloponnesian War, on the other hand, was a conflict between Athens and Sparta that reshaped the power balance in ancient Greece and resulted in the downfall of the Athenian empire.
Herodotus and Thucydides, known as the “father of history” and a founding father of political realism, respectively, authored important works on these wars.

Primary Responsibilities
- Deliver one lecture per week and conduct one seminar for two different seminar groups.
- Update the Blackboard site, module handbook, and module materials as needed.
- Communicate with students and be available for office hours to discuss assignments.
- Mark assignments and provide feedback to students.
- Monitor seminar attendance and report any attendance issues to the students’ Personal Academic Tutor (PAT).
Essential Skills:
- Ongoing or completed PhD on a topic related to the Ancient Greeks at War module.
- Experience in teaching and assessing at the undergraduate level.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable Skills:
- Familiarity with Blackboard, the online learning system used for undergraduate modules.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and initiative.
Additional Information
This position requires a PhD, either in progress or completed, focusing on a topic related to the Ancient Greeks at War module.
Teaching and assessment experience at the undergraduate level is essential, as you will be responsible for delivering engaging lectures and conducting seminars for two different groups of students.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary to effectively convey complex historical concepts to students. It is also desirable to have familiarity with Blackboard,
the online learning system used for undergraduate modules. Problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative are valuable assets in this role.
As the module lecturer, you will play a vital role in updating the Blackboard site, module handbook, and other relevant materials as needed.
You will be responsible for maintaining communication with students and providing guidance during office hours to discuss assignments and address any questions or concerns they may have.
Assessment is a crucial part of this role, and you will be responsible for marking assignments and providing constructive feedback to students.
